  • The metropolitan freight task is a significant one from a regional and national perspective.

Project Benefits

  • Improvement of freight capacity between the Darling Downs and the Port of Brisbane is critical for the movement of goods. Partially export oriented goods.
  • Movement of freight within and external to the Port of Brisbane is a critical element of South East Queensland economic success. Higher speed rail access provides new market opportunities.
  • The export task is the central role of the Port of Brisbane and the construction of an additional rail line will benefit export businesses; and benefit the State and national economies. The project seeks to assist the freight task facing regional areas such as the Darling Downs and is focused on supporting the export economy.
  • Critical element of the ongoing development of the southern and western parts of the South East Queensland region. The project addresses current conflicts between passenger and freight services.
  • Minimisation of the impact of heavy vehicle use of the region's road network. Shifting of freight to a less carbon intensive mode.
  • The project will positively impact economic and environmental outcomes in the South East Queensland region. The project would strengthen linkages with existing and future inter-state and intra-state rail network.
